Yes it can be used in dry land
The picture shows N as 180 because when you are using the compass you are looking at a window on the side. So when it's pointed N the window will show 0º. It looks wrong from the top but when you use it properly from the side window it works just fine.
The compass and the wristband are separable. Just pull the wristband out.
